Madden and Me
So I play a lot video games (like a LOT) and I love sports. So naturally games like NBA 2k, Madden, and NCAA Football are going to grab my attention when they get released. Now it use to be that you would control a coach or a player and just play as that actual person in the game, but know it's a little different. I was recently playing Madden NFL 13 and went to start a season with my New England Patriots and was presented with an option that asked me to create a coach, so I thought why not and gave it a try. However, when you create a coach you can name if after yourself and even go to easports.com and import a picture of yourself into the game and the game will create a video game character of you. This meant that I got to coach the Patriots! It also means that guys like Tom Brady, Edelman, Gronk, and I are now officially besties for the resties. Of course I realize that this is by definition a parasocial relationship and that none of these people have any idea who I am even after I won them six straight Super Bowls (ungrateful jerks). But I seriously think it is easier than ever before to develop these parasocial relationships with these virtual characters because it also you to be part of their world. Who could pass up being a video game character? It's the best. It gets to the point that when you are prompted to trade one of your favorite players you won't do it. Not because they are your favorite, but weirdly because you feel like they are your buddy. And you don't trade your buddies, you just sit down have a drink with them and hash it out, right Mr. Irsay? Anyway that is one of my parasocial relationships that I have currently going on. I want to know any that you guys may have. They can be weird, serious, funny, or whatever. Whatever it is, just comment below and let me know!
