Ad-buster and
Disconnecting from the Internet
While reading through the culture jamming and video
pranksters article I became very confused with some parts. I decided go online
and explore more examples of ad busting. The first website I was able to locate
was the official website of Adbusters called Adbuster.org. I found this site to
be a good way of visually showing me multiple examples of adbusting. When I
looked at the adbuster home page I found out that they write articles about
current events and other things. While reading through this I discovered that
they had a challenge for the readers of this page for the New Year. These challenges are of direct result of
always having an access to the Internet and technology. I feel that within the
present day that we as a society are addicted to technology a little too much
and sometimes stepping away from technology is a good thing.
They
suggest that on day one to log in on to your social media account and actually
suspend the account for one whole day.
The next day you may turn to your social media account. The next day
they suggested that after reading today’s their post that you pick up the
nearest book to you and begin reading to calm your fragmented mind. The next
day they suggest you turning off your cell phone. If this is too hard then to
download their app which will not allow you to access your phone for a set
amount of time. The 4th day Adbuster suggests that you break your
normal life and to go out and talk and meet someone, to actually being with
someone, and to actually connect with another human face to face. The next day,
the 5th day, they challenge you to go out into nature and enjoy
nature as a whole. The 6th day Adbuster suggest turning off your
computer and staying offline for one whole day. The 7th day the only
thing written is “And the seventh day… just silence” Adbuster. This made me
think, ponder about my own life and it’s relationship with technology.
Thinking
back onto this article they are not suggesting ending all relationship with
technology, just a small one day challenge that then builds up to a week long
detox of technology from your life.
