Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?

After class I asked myself ,“Am I lonely?” Now, I’d like to believe that I’m not, but I had to re-evaluate my social network relationship. Do I rely on FB and other social networks to bring me happiness? Or to “give me life”? I think in a weird way that we do Maybe FB is not making us lonely anymore, but social networks have expanded way past a social board. There is now Instagram, Twitter, Vine, KIK, Ask.Fm, GroupMe, Snapchat, Etc. All of these “new” social networks are not really “new,” but they are the “old” versions revamped. Instagram is Twitter, but only with pictures. Vine is Twitter, but only with pictures. Vine is Twitter with 6 second videos. Snapchat is vine, but only sent to specific people. Revamp! Revamp! Revamp!

Now, we all criticize social media and the different social networks, but I have 7 of those social media accounts. Of course, I don’t really use them all, but I do have them. Buy why? What is the need for all of these accounts to interact with the same people? I’m not quite sure, but I do believe that social media gives us a sense of belonging or comfort. Is it false? Not necessarily. Instead of having to call people at their homes (because what are cell phones?) we simply shoot a text or “like” all of their pictures on Insta (or“ the gram”) to show that we’re thinking of them. It’s different. It’s not as personal, but is it horrible? I’m not sure.
