Recently, a friend of mine informed me that someone she knows is trying out for a reality show instead of going to college. At this I wondered, when did becoming a reality TV star become a future "hopes and dreams" aspiration?
It could be debated that this career choice started when shows like the real world aired many years ago. But I'd like to make the argument that this became an appealing option when people saw the after math of the reality show Jersey Shore characters and the live that waited for them after their hit TV debut and continuing, highly rated seasons.
After the shows slow and much needed death, the characters continued to live on. This was different from many past reality shows whose faces we never saw again except when they robbed a convenience store 5 years later or something criminally newsworthy. In the jersey shore case though, all the characters but one had their own spin off reality shows, launched product lines and are continually paid insane amounts of money for "celebrity" appearances. With this reward just being from simply partying like a college student on camera in front of America, its crazy to think some believe this could make a good life.
It is only becoming more prevalent with the increasing amount of new and "out there" upcoming shows. With entire networks dedicated to these kind of shows could being a reality star become a career choice and should we worry about the mentality and kind of people it creates?
