After reading the article, "Why Do People Hate Hipsters?" I had a little chuckle to myself. There is so much hatred towards hipsters that I wasn't aware of!
Upon hearing that our topic of discussion for class was the hate for hipsters, I'll admit, I got a little nervous because more than once, I've been called a hipster. I'm thinking it had to do with how I was dressed or the music I listen to, because that is the external of what the public sees of me. The typical hipster is described as wearing flannels, having tattoos, riding a fixed-wheel bike, being pretentious, eating only organic or grass-fed whatever and listening to unknown bands(which isn't even possible..). But besides from being pretentious, what is wrong with all of these things? This is why I'm confused as to why people hate hipsters. Flannels are warm, having tattoos doesn't have a demographic and have been around for thousands of years, riding a fixed-gear bike or any bike for that matter is great exercise, and eating organic or eating "healthy" is common sense and a great way to take care of your body.
I guess my main argument is me defending myself, since I necessarily didn't want to in class. I'm sure when looked at, a "normal" person might describe me as looking like a hipster, but what they might not know is that I believe I'm far from it, because to be honest, I hate the whole phenomenon of the hipster, because I hate the whole phenomenon of judgement. I am not pretentious or believe i'm better than someone, nor will I ever, I shop at second-hand stores because I enjoy the thrill of the hunt and because I'm poor and because I'm a fashion major and it's a great way for me to spend time by myself. Yes, I do have a fixed-gear bike, but I ride it to class(weather permitting) because it takes me 5 minutes apposed to 20 when walking, so who wouldn't want that?! And lastly, I listen to bands that make me feel good, but don't we all? I listen to every genre of music. I like Bruno Mars and I like Oldies and I like Country.
I believe the only thing we should be "judging" people for is how they treat people. If someone dressed in a flannel treats someone like shit, you wouldn't assume that everyone that wears flannels treats people like shit right?
I guess my point here is that I'm asking everyone to not jump to conclusions with how people are dressed or by what music they're listening to, but just to have an open mind, because it could be surprising how much you could learn from someone.
