The Male Species

One of my biggest pet peeves in life, is when someone makes a dig at me just because I am a girl. I hate that just because I am a female, people around me think that I can't do any normal activity that a male can do. I am not saying I am some macho manly ripped girl, but I like knowing that I can be independant and do things on my own. I am perfectly fine fixing my own things, making my own decisions and doing anything and everything that I can.

What I think makes me the most mad is when boys make digs at girls about sports. We can enjoy sports too, boys. I happen to really enjoys sports and am quite good at them too. My whole family is athletic and we all love sports so I grew up in a very competitive, sports loving family. I had my favorite basketball teams, football teams, hockey teams, etc. and the boys always thought it was so weird that I was that interested in them. I would beats half of them in any game and they still would continue to make fun of me. It was beyond annoying thinking that just because I was a girl, I couldnt enjoy things that they also enjoy.

Binge Watching TV Shows

So, I recently just blogged about how I have a guilty pleasure of watching reality TV shows and absolutely loving it, but one thing that I can get super caught up in and not even know it, is binge watching TV shows. If you put a computer in front of me with an interesting Netflix series, I could lay there all day. I binged watch One Tree Hill and loved every second of it. It was weird knowing that my life low key revolved around getting home to go watch One Tree Hill. It was literally all I ever thought about and I was ok with that.

That was actually the only TV I have ever binged watched, but I don't regret one second of it. Every episode was better than the last and I couldn't get enough of it.

I realize how much time I spent watching One Tree Hill, but I never cared that I was missing out on some good times. I never had a problem with myself binge watching this show, but I absolutely hate when my friends spend so much time watching Netflix. Like I said, I never really watch that much TV, it may not sound like it based on my recent blogs, but I am more of a book person. I love to read. But when my friends get stuck on series and continuously watch episodes, I get annoyed. I have just come to realize that this is what life has come to. Netflix is taking over.

Reality TV Shows

Reality TV shows are honestly a guilty pleasure of mine. I don't watch much TV, but I can say that I have a fair share of shows that I enjoy watching such as The Real Housewives, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Duck Dynasty and I hate to admit it, but sometimes I will watch Teen Mom. I know that all these shows are scripted, but I thoroughly enjoy seeing these people try to act and then make a fool of themselves. Obviously, half the things that happen on these reality TV shows are beyond fake and scripted, which makes them hilarious. People are often talking about how they are offended by these shows and that I shouldn't support such things that teach the younger generation that sex, greed, partying, etc. is acceptable. No parent wants to see his or her son or daughter go absolutely wild on national television, but like I said before, I think it's hilarious. Mainly, because it's not me acting like a complete fool in front of half of America.

What I do think is kind of absurd, is the ridiculous amount of money that some of these people make per episode. I remember when I was a huge Jersey Shore fan; they were making about $100,000 an episode. Lets be real, any of us would go nuts on national TV for about 12-15 episodes if you were offered that much money for drinking, eating, sleeping and working in a T-shirt shop

Gender and Sexuality and T.V.

Today in class we focused on gender and sexuality that are portrayed on television. We really hit different main points about feminism and focusing on girl power programming. Girl power is a niche in the TV market and it became part of the media logic. There are a wide variety of shows that teach girls about gender identity. These shows showed girls that girls could be different. It was ok to be different. The different shows portrayed girls as being realistic, not too girly, it showed girls how to treat their friends and family appropriately and it showed girls how to treat school the right way.

We all had our favorite TV shows when we were younger, but we never knew that they were teaching us gender identity and giving us ideas about who we really are. We can all relate back to that one character that had a huge impact on our lives and we wanted to be just like them. I connected to a bunch of shows, but the show that was my absolute favorite was Rocket Power. A lot of girls, I am sure, can relate to this show along with me. The show was about a group of kids, 3 boys and 1 girl, who were all best friends and did a bunch of different activities together. Reggie, who was the girl, was my favorite character. She was tough, smart, athletic and funny. She could hang with the guys and that was why I liked her so much. She had a casual style and that was my favorite part. I hated dressing up when I younger and knowing that Reggie in Rocket Power never dressed up either made me feel ok about myself. I could hang with the guys and could even beat half of them in any sport I wanted just like she could. Even though I never knew I was relating to her on so many different levels and why, I always knew she was my favorite.
