Prevelance of food and social media

Why is food becoming so prevalent on social media? There is not a day that goes by I don’t see an Instagram post or a tweet regarding hunger, what someone is eating, or where someone is eating. It is becoming a communal experience. I mentioned in class that a friend of mine is known for posting “food porn.” How did this become a thing? Food porn is food that is essentially so appealing it can be described as sexy. This all started because this friend of mine posting a picture on Instagram of a desert that looked absolutely delicious and it received over 100 likes. People were even going as far as describing it as orgasmic. It is relatable. The majority of our society likes fatting and decorating food. This made this girl feel as though people wanted to know where she was eating and what she was getting.

This created the community. The many people who followed her on Instagram wanted to know what she was eating next and where she was getting it. She was unknowingly advertising for every place that she received food from. She did not intentionally do this but it was working to bring others into the food porn world. I soon realized that other people on my feed were doing the same thing. Food is something every human being has in common and people are bound to respond to through social media. When we watched the commercial about taco bell picking up on the prevalence of social media it clicked in my mind. We are helping the advertisement of these companies, we are helping their brand and we are doing it subconsciously.
