Christine Harold's portrayal of culture jamming provoked the idea and had me as a listener enthralled in the message. After a day of class and thought, I'm not as convinced as I thought. Actually I've decided that it really isn't a movement at all. I've decided that this type of rhetorical message and activism would be torn apart by Gladwell and probably praised by Bizstone. Yes, it allows society to look at branding in a new light or new perspective but so what? There's no suggested route to take no action for anyone to get on board with. I mentioned in class that after reading about "culture jamming" and "pranksters" I loved the message Christine Harold was presenting about these people. They were showing brands that consumed in our society in a new light. A playful idea or something to think about but no extreme path to follow. I like that, these pranksters are merely stating the Truth.
Maybe that is all this campaign is about. I believe that this is probably the idea behind culture jamming. For example, when I looked about culture jamming my computer overloaded with oppositional fake Nike brands. The many icons portrayed children slaving over item all while starving and in rags for clothes. This allowed me to reflect on what is really going on behind the shoes I NEED to have. The money I am investing although these children probably aren't receiving nearly enough for what I pay. It provoked my mind to see this brand less Godly and more robotic. It's not all about just doing it or wanting us to succeed in our athletics/physical well being. It is about us buying into these ideas and take this brand to the top because of what we believe it portrays. I can see the brand in a different way because of culture jamming. It is merely a shoe anymore...but on the other hand, I'll still buy tennis shoes and clothes because that is what I am comfortable in. I think it's safe to say this is what many people do. They think about it a little more but still carry on with the viral brands. This is not a movement, no change is happening, we are just recognizing the bigger picture.
