"X Gon' Give It To Ya"

Apparently, rapper DMX is scheduled to fight the infamous George Zimmerman in a celebrity-boxing match. Yes, I didn't believe it at first either. For those of you who don't know who George Zimmerman is (which I hope is no one), he was on trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin, only later to be found not guilty.

First off, this is wrong in every way possible. Why in the world are we giving this guy more attention in the media? Zimmerman is just starving for more and more attention as some infamous celebrity, and we’re allowing it to happen. Even if DMX wins the fight there is no positive outcome.  There will be no justice served for anything that has happened in the past and god forbid if Zimmerman just so happens to win, he will just be getting exactly what he wants. We are already letting him get what he wants.

I think one of the roots to this problem is Social Media. Without the exposure and platform that social media is serving this story would not have nearly as much coverage and may not have even been relevant. Boxing promoter, David Feldman, started opening applications for celebrities to be paired with potential opponents and he received over 15,000 applications, 8,000 of them asking to fight Zimmerman. I feel that with the rise of social media, we as a society have began to “defy deviancy down” and most things that used to seem immoral and wrong are becoming more acceptable to us. Sure, I get that some people would love to see Zimmerman get pummeled by DMX, but having the fight be nationally aired and letting the fighters receive a financial gain from us as viewers just doesn't seem right. We have to stop amplifying these types of stories in the media because the more we do, the more we reinforce this as being normal and ok.

Here’s a few links to articles over the story if anyone is interested.
