Binge Watching Sports
My favorite topic of any media is undoubtedly
sports. A lot of people in class have
spoken about how they spend time watching different T.V. shows like game of
thrones of how I met your mother, but for me its sports. Any sport will pretty much hold me captive
and prevent me from accomplishing anything.
For many of the communications students in class they are addicted to
the story line or the underlying messages in each episode, but for me, it’s the
pure competition that has be addicted to any game I watch. It’s not just the games themselves though, I’m
just as addicted to the talk shows where analysts come in front of the camera
to argue and list pointless statistics to prove their point.
In class
we discussed about how binge watching is provoked by a story line which holds
the attention of their views captive for hours at a time. Well to be honest I
think it is the same reason that people get addicted to sports. The perfect
example is the NFL draft. Although the
first NFL game will not start until August 3rd, the viewership of
the sport remains constant throughout the off season because of these shows. I
am a fan of the Detroit Lions, and to be honest, I don’t get very excited about
watching other teams play. However, during the draft season, I can sit there
and tell you what every single team is projected to fit in the first round.
For me the
reason why people get addicted to the draft and analysis shows is the exact
same reason that people get addicted to other shows. It is the story line. These shows combined
with the game create a story line that is continuous throughout the season and
the post season. To me this is why we have so many sports addicts in general
but especially football addicts in America and why people will spend hours a
day watching shows that truly are a complete waste of time.

Why I Hate Mainstream News Media and its Part in Politics
Look part of me is really into
politics mostly because it affects our lives whether we like it or not.
However, with the political bias of most mainstream news stations, predominantly
FOX and CNN, it has caused me to view broadcast media as being the source of
America’s downfall.
As
people know we have had a bipartisan system of government for a long time, however
in the past the two parties have been able to put their difference in opinions aside
in order to accomplish necessary tasks.
At this point any college student understands how to work in a group,
even if you do not get along all the time you manage to come together for the
sake of success. Why is it that we are
capable of working together while our representatives cannot? I argue that it is because of our media.
Stations like FOX and CNN claim to
be unbiased, but any educated American should be able to look at their reports
and spot the inconsistencies in statistics, and spin on stories, and realize
otherwise. However, the Americans that
look at the situation and question their intentions are not the concern of
these stations. Rather, similar to
stations producing Here Comes Honey Boo
Boo, and other shows, they feed off of Americans that cannot see the underlying
bullshit that they portray as fact.
In truth I recognize the benefits
that media can have in educating, and communicating to people around the world.
However, for now they are using their influence to separate citizens that all
identify themselves as Americans. I ask
that you really take the time to think about what I have said, for months I
have spent my down time philosophizing over the politics and the role that
media plays. In truth we need to realize
that political parties are as manipulative and trash ridden as mainstream
media. And the only thing that both these entities will accomplish is the
divide and destruction of Americans by taking advantage of the stereotypes of
social classes, genders and races that they have created.

We are Zombies and Social Media is the Problem
In
general I have a pretty philosophical mind. I spend a lot of my down time
staring at my TV and thinking about things that are probably pretty irrelevant
to a lot of other people that I have met. However, I took the time to watch a
few episodes of the walking dead for the first time in my life. Not
really because I care about the show but because after the Eric Watts lecture I
it really provoked me to do a little more research into the connection between
Zombies and our society. To be honest the show really is not something
that I am interested in all, I think there are plenty of other shows, *cough
cough* Game of Thrones that I feel are more worthy of my day.
However,
it got me thinking about how our society can really relate to them. For example, I connect with a lot of people on
Facebook that attend different schools and many of them have a passion for
politics. One of them posted a really a political post with a really negative
outlook on Humanity. He stated that the poor are sucking the life out of
the economy, and how they are all alcoholics and drug addicts that want people
who work to pay for their addictions. A few years ago, I probably would have
agreed with him but in truth it is a prime example of how society is becoming “zombified.”In
my opinion social media is the biggest problem.
We have supplemented virtual relationships for physical ones; we would
rather sit at home and consume rather than go out and experience true empathy
for people who live under more difficult circumstances than we do. That is the true meaning of a zombie, but
sadly the only way that we are going to be able to stop it is if we take the
time to educate people through daily conversation, which in these days will
almost always be over social media, the problem.

Disney a Manipulator
Anyone who grew up in the United States is familiar with the
Disney classics such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White. However, few of us realized the impact that
movies like this have on our psyche as we continue to grow through adolescences
and into adulthood. As a male, I cannot
say that I spent much time watching movies where the main character was a
princess, just because it was not going to take priority over Power Rangers, Pokémon
or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
What I did not
realize until this passed weeks lecture however is that although the movies had
very little impact on my expectations as a guy, it could have influence over
the relationships that I have had over the last five years. Every one of us, regardless of gender, has complained
about the other sex in respect to dating.
“She’s clingy.” “He’s insensitive.” Or my personal favorite, “Guys suck!”
In reality there is a large possibility that we can attribute our frustration
to the gender roles and flawless nature, that are portrayed in Walt Disney’s
classic princess films.
Now do not take what I am saying out of context, this post
is not at all targeting woman alone. I for one prefer to date a strong woman
with her own goals as well as her own quirks and flaws. However, in numerous relationships I have been
the victim of unreasonable expectations. Obviously we cannot prove that these
unreasonable expectations for both genders are completely attributed to the
portrayal of flawless human beings in Disney movies. However, I believe that as long as we
continue to allow the sponge like brains of children to be influenced by these
twenty plus year old films it will only continue to hurt relationships in which
both parties do not realize that flawless is not conducive to reality.
