So, as everybody may know the Masters tournament was held this weekend in Augusta, Georgia. For those of you who do not really know the significance of this tournament in the golf world, its basically the Superbowl for golf. The course has a reputation for being long, tricky, and with difficult greens. Only a select number of golfers have won this event multiple times, but this weekend another was added to the list and his name is Bubba Watson.

He actually recently won this tournament two years ago and is known for being built for this course. He is a strong left handed player that can easily drive 300+ yards, no problem. I was actually an avid fan of him because hes a small town guy and his style of play is unorthodox, which makes him interesting to watch. I rooted for him for most of the match.........until it happened. He was on the 18th hole, not even finished with the round may I add, and he was already almost hysterical in tears.I immediately thought back to our chapter on feminism and thought this subject was perfect.  Are you kidding me? Instead of yelling out and celebrating for accomplishing this milestone in his career, hes up there sobbing? The announcers probably said he was an "emotional player" a good 50 times. Needless to say, I flipped the channel and put this guy behind me forever.

Now don't get me wrong, everyone needs a good cry sometimes. Everyone has emotions, but crying typically comes from being sad. I am not a believer in tears of joy and from the looks of it Bubba Watson seemed like a tired, whiny preteen instead of a champion. I wouldn't have even minded it if it was a short cry and moved past it, but he just kept it going and even acknowledged how he would probably "cry later just thinking about it." Well, call me old fashioned but when you win you celebrate, when you lose you cry. 45 minutes of sobbing is overkill in my opinion, and my whole perception on Bubba has changed forever.

Walking Knowledge

We recently has Eric Watts in class and he gave a very interesting presentation. What he did was share his research and experiences on the Zombie genre which has become popular in our popular culture over about the last 80 years or so. Personally, I have always enjoyed this science fiction style of movies or shows, stemming from my love for the Resident Evil movie series. I guess I liked the movies because it have me a sense of hysteria but helped me to realize that things may not always go as planned and if problems get bad enough, our safety can be compromised and we need to find ways of survival.

Interesting enough, when Mr. Watts spoke to the class he started the presentation explaining how Zombie media usually proceeds major negative event. He discussed how the movies display mindless or hopeless people wandering around a wasteland basically oblivious to surroundings. He links how after major events our society can be brain dead and not really understand impacts of situations. I felt a sense of foolishness because here I was thinking of Zombies as a fantasy world strictly for entertainment when really it symbolizes a much greater picture. I learned from Eric to dig deeper into subjects and really try to understand the message being conveyed.

Still Hungover...

So as we all know, good old St. Pattys Day was this past Monday and I am still feeling its repercussions. The funny thing is that my parents are 100% Mexican which means I do not have a single drop of Irish blood in me. The thing that I do happen to have in common with the Irish culture is, while being a college student, I enjoy a couple of drinks with my buddies. Of course, on this particular holiday a couple of beers turns into a couple of cases. I have probably had the most fun at college on this day because all of my friends really get in the spirit with their green hats, beads, awesome beer mugs, and basically anything else that helps celebrate the holiday.

The funny thing is after we tell our ridiculous stories and shenanigans we got into that day....we start to talk about all the money we spent. This really got me thinking because in class we have been talking about how companies and the media blow up certain trends or fads that are popular in order to make a size-able profit. So I thought to myself, is St. Patrick Day really just another corporate mimic for companies to bank off of young adults? Unfortunately the more I thought about it the more I realized exactly what was going on; Bud Light releasing green aluminum cans, Guinness and Jameson going on sale, and just about every retail store setting up a huge display to sell green apparel. I guess I always viewed this day as a day to be young and celebrate drinking, but I didn't really realize the price I pay for that experience. Don't get me wrong I'll be celebrating this holiday for years to come, but Ill be more conscious of products and not let them affect my wallet as much!

Call of Doody: Lets call it what it is

I thought today's class was interesting because, not being much of a gamer myself, I could really see how much video games impact kids/teens. I tend limit my video game use to a couple games of FIFA, Mario Kart and NFL Blitz. Honestly, I think it may be that fact that I am not very good at any other game and lack the patience to learn are the biggest reasons why I stray away from them. According to class, I am in the mere 10% of the guys within my age group that do not play first person shooter games. I was actually not very surprised because most of my friends spend hours of their day obsessing over reaching a certain number of kills or gaining experience to earn a higher rank, but I don't blame them, passes the time I suppose.

What I really took from class is how much people believe they learn from playing these games. I sear I would be rich if I had a nickel every time someone told me they were the best FIFA player ever, I would be filthy rich. The truth is games should be recreational and I just do not think something as realistic as war should be portrayed as a game. I can understand people of age enjoying the game, but unfortunately children are being exposed to the game and are becoming accustomed to the violence of war before they can really critically understand the concept of what war brings. It is a shame that children have gone from Super Mario to Super Soldiers.
