Last Blog

To say the least, this class has been interesting.  I had no idea what to expect going into this class.  Honestly, I just needed my tier two class and this one was referred to me by my friend, so I took it.  I am very happy that I ended up taking this class.  It made me think in ways that I have never thought that I never could.  It gave me a huge perspective to other people and their majors outside of business majors.  All last year I only took business classes, so taking this class got me away from all of that and it has been a nice change.  I now have a better understanding of social media and how it affects people.  I have learned so much in this class, and the great thing about it is that I can use all of this new information and relate it in a business perspective. This class has only made my knowledge stronger and more open to new things.  I thought this class would just be one of those classes outside of my major that I do not care about at all and just get by, but it has not been one of those classes.  Every time I sit in class, I learn so much new information it is crazy.  Business classes overlap in a way, so it is nice to get my mind off things and to listen about things other than business.  My overall experience has been great.

Binge watching

Binge watching is a serious habit that many people have in today's world.  Now whether it is a bad or good thing, I guess that is just on how you look at it.  If you are trying to get away from the world and just relaxing, then binge watching a TV show is not a bad thing.  On the other hand, you have a big exam coming up and you are just putting off the studying because you cannot get your eyes off the TV screen from the binge watching you are doing, now binge watching is not a good thing.  I know I have suffered binge watching, not too many times, but more than once.  My three shows that I truly consider myself binge watching is Lost, Shameless, and Breaking Bad.  They are all completely different TV series that for some reason I could not stop watching.  Over the summer I would literally not leave the house at all and just watch Shameless.  I would get mad at myself for continuing to watch episode after episode, but I could not help it.  Before I started watching Shameless, the same thing happened to me with Breaking Bad and Lost.  I never really watched TV series before my friend got me into Lost.  Once Lost was over I had to start something else, so I started Breaking Bad, which lead to Shameless after that.  It has slowly became a problem of mine and it is slowly getting worse. I also have told myself once summer starts, that I am going to start Game of Thrones, which brings me great fear because of how good I have heard it is. At the end of this summer the only thing I might complete is Game of Thrones, which in this case is not a good type of binge watching.

Codes of Gender video

Last week we watched a video called Codes of Gender and this video talked about different poses that men and women do when getting their picture taken.  This video was really interesting to me because I never thought about different poses that genders do and what they actually mean.  Although, I do not agree 100% with this video it made me think a lot.  I was thinking that maybe back in the day the certain poses that genders do really do mean something, like in the video it had girls never looking confident and authoritative, but instead looking like they are scared.  I believe back sometime ago this was probably true of why women do certain poses and why men do certain poses, but now I believe it is just for attention and to look "sexy" for women and also with men.  Now, females and males are still doing these poses, but I believe it just is natural and has no real meaning behind each pose besides if it is sexy or not.  Everybody is always worried how they look in pictures and I know a lot of people that take a thousand pictures just to get the perfect one because of how judgmental our social media has become.  I agree with the video for the most part, I just feel that we as a society has came away from the actual meaning behind the poses and we just go for the sexiest, best looking pose we can possibly do.

Branding

Yesterday in class we were talking about how kids with the most popular brands are or what seem to be the "cool" kids.  We were talking about how if you had Lego's as a kid then you considered "cool" and not only if you had Lego's, but if you had the Lego's that no one had.  This reminded me of when I was a little kid, my family and I went to Minnesota to visit some family and while we were there we went to Mall of America and shopped.  At the time of this trip I was really young and wanted to go to Lego-Land and get some new Lego's because I heard that they sell Lego's that they do not sell anywhere else in the U.S.. I wanted to have the coolest Lego's of any of my friends to make me that much "cooler".  I remember I ended up getting some Lego's that I knew none of my friends would have.  When I got back to my hometown I started showing off my new Lego's to all my friends and thought I was so cool because of them.  I was branded by Lego's as a young kid and still to this day I am branded by many "cool" brands. That was just the start to brands that I always have to get no matter what.  I sometimes hate shopping for clothes because I always have trouble buying something from a brand that I am not familiar with.

My parasocial relationship with Peyton Manning

As all of you know, my boy Peyton Manning just got dominated in the super bowl, and I am not too happy about it. I may or may not be obsessed with him and that is why I have a parasocial relationship with Peyton.  I have "known" and been "friends" with Peyton Manning ever since I was a little kid growing up and our bond has grown over the years.  I have watched Peyton Manning play his whole career as a Indianapolis Colt and now I am watching him play as a Denver Bronco.  Every time Peyton plays a game and does good or bad, I am always screaming at the T.V. after every play he makes or does not make.  My bond with him is stronger than ever and will not become weak until the day he retires.  This year he had the greatest regular season of all time, but came short in the super bowl.  I usually do not care who wins the super bowl unless the Colts are playing, but now that Peyton is not part of the Colts, I have to cheer on the Broncos too.  I did not like the Broncos at all until Peyton started playing with them.  He has been my idol since day one and will always be my "best friend" in my heart at least.  The way he presents himself and how he deals with adversity is amazing and something I try to live up to.  I hardly ever miss a game when he is playing even if I have something more important to do, I still continue to watch him, and always will until he retires.
