For this blog I decided to talk
about something that was discussed in class today, Masculinity in TV. This is
something that is seen more often then most people might think. First lets
start with the actual definition, masculinity is a set of qualities,
characteristics or roles generally considered typical of, or appropriate to, a
man. This definition can include a lot of examples seen on TV everyday; one
that stood out to me when I first heard about this topic was Tim Alan, who
played Tim “The Tool man” Taylor on the TV show Home Improvements. I thought about this TV show because I feel like
it best represents the use of masculinity in the show. Some example of this
would be when Tim is working on his car in the garage all-day and trying to get
his sons to learn the importance of working on your own cars rather than
getting someone else to do the maintenance on it. Another example is he stars
in his own show that talks all about how to build stuff, along side one of his
best friends who is also all about building things. The also put a sterotype of
the dumb male, when they added Tim’s best friend in the show because he is show
doing some dumb things that gets them both hurt or in danger. In the end, this
whole show is a perfect example of the use of masculinity in TV which is what
we discussed in class today.
