Binge Watching Sports

My favorite topic of any media is undoubtedly sports.  A lot of people in class have spoken about how they spend time watching different T.V. shows like game of thrones of how I met your mother, but for me its sports.  Any sport will pretty much hold me captive and prevent me from accomplishing anything.  For many of the communications students in class they are addicted to the story line or the underlying messages in each episode, but for me, it’s the pure competition that has be addicted to any game I watch.  It’s not just the games themselves though, I’m just as addicted to the talk shows where analysts come in front of the camera to argue and list pointless statistics to prove their point.

In class we discussed about how binge watching is provoked by a story line which holds the attention of their views captive for hours at a time. Well to be honest I think it is the same reason that people get addicted to sports. The perfect example is the NFL draft.  Although the first NFL game will not start until August 3rd, the viewership of the sport remains constant throughout the off season because of these shows. I am a fan of the Detroit Lions, and to be honest, I don’t get very excited about watching other teams play. However, during the draft season, I can sit there and tell you what every single team is projected to fit in the first round.

For me the reason why people get addicted to the draft and analysis shows is the exact same reason that people get addicted to other shows.  It is the story line. These shows combined with the game create a story line that is continuous throughout the season and the post season. To me this is why we have so many sports addicts in general but especially football addicts in America and why people will spend hours a day watching shows that truly are a complete waste of time.
