Feminism in China

Feminism is a quite new word for Chinese people. We all know China has a long history. However, empires controlled China for thousands of years. So basically, new Chinese government was established by no more than a hundred years.

In ancient China, Women has no power, they cannot participate in politics or any social events. They are encouraged to be stay at home to take care of kids and do housework. In Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), since the empire liked the way women walking by tiny foot. So the whole country ordered that all the women need to foot binding. The smallest foot could be 4 inch. It makes women in that time cannot go out for a long time. It also encouraged being stay at home and never going out.

Nowadays, as a female live in modern society, without any doubt, we would feel intolerable about this kind of behavior. However, the reason why feminism is not as popular as it is in western countries is because the ancient Chinese tradition was deeply rooted in Chinese people’s mind for thousands years. It’s really hard to ask them accept women have more powers in a short time.

In the past few decades, there were a lot of writers wrote about the idea of feminism. Also, with more people get educated, and the developing globalization, more Chinese people are accepting the idea of feminism. Newspaper, TV, films, and other social media are impact people’s mind. Obviously, the unfair treatments of women are largely reduced in modern China. Although the feminism is not as popular as it is in western countries, but it becomes better. There are more women participate in politics, sports, news and other social events. Without any doubt, the amount of feminists in China must develop faster than before.
