Heteronormativity
"Media logic says that T.V audience is hetero-normative." I believe that it is very apparent in our society that most people practice heteronormativity. I myself tend to just assume someone is straight unless I am told otherwise. I find it rude at times, when people just assume weather or not a person is straight for them. It is to ones own discretion weather not they want to allow you to know their own personal information. Majority of people in society identify as straight and not homosexual, etc. I find it interesting when shows have openly gay characters. I am going to use Orange is the New Black as an example. It is shown at the beginning that Piper Chapman is engaged to be married and is sent to jail. The story of her experience with another woman is exposed in the first episode. It is shocking in a sense, to the audience when one sees a character in which he or she is straight, but turns out to have had experimental stages. I find it to be very intriguing when characters are open about their sexuality and are comfortable with it. In the near future there will begin to not be a spectacle that comes along with seeing an "out" character in film or on television. I hope that the media continues to experiment with the idea of homosexual characters. It is very refreshing to see the turn that media is taking when it comes to heteronormativity. I believe that just as integration of the African American's and the whites happened, more people will become informed of homosexuality in the media and begin to accept it more.
