Honey Boo Boo

“Reality” tv does not do a very good job of presenting reality. Honey Boo Boo is a great example of amplifying the typical redneck stereotypes; stupidity, poverty, and social trashiness. Honey Boo Boo and her family probably really are rednecks, but are they ignorant? I think that Mama June has a little bit of intelligence. She had the foresight to set up trust funds for each of her children to protect their money, giving them access when they turn 21. To me, this is a very responsible and smart thing to do. Look at all of the child celebrities who make millions and end up being socially destructive: Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan. Mama June has done a great thing to set up her family’s finances as she has done.

In reality, the Honey Boo Boo family is not poor, but I believe that they really were before the show. Mama June had to use coupons and played bingo in order to win money to support the pageantry. Now that they have money from doing the show all these years, they still live as though they are poor. I think this is really because money is not important to them, and they lead simple lives; demonstrated by Mama June wearing Keds. Some people just don’t get all excited about money, but would rather live simply.

I think that we can laugh at poor people such as Honey Boo Boo’s family because we know that they are getting paid for us to laugh at them. If they were a normal poor family, we would feel badly for them. However, since we know that they are being paid a lot of money, we don’t feel badly for laughing at them for living a redneck, working class lifestyle.
