Honey Boo Boo

Today's discussion in class, has led me to think about the "reality" shows that are on television and my opinion of them. I have always had mixed feelings about how these shows exploit the subjects while at the same time helping them. The dilemma I have with those shows are that we are making fun of people. The positive thing I see in it is that some of these shows are financially helping their lifestyles.

Take Honey Boo Boo for example; her claim to fame is being this chubby, ignorant girl that is winning pageants. We tune in week after week to laugh at her family's customs of dress shopping and fixing "Sketti" (their spin on spaghetti; which consists of noodles, ketchup and butter). And while we are laughing that their bad vocabulary and loud farts they are heading to the bank with more cash than you and I have. Is it wrong that with our laughter, Alana and her sisters now have a college fund? I don't think so. And is Mama June and Suga Bear (her husband) oblivious to that? I think not. Regardless of how "ignorant" they seem, they (or whoever manages them) knows that ignorance sells so therefore they play that role. And they will be playing that role all the way to the bank.
