OITNB; an Outsiders Perspective

So although I really wanted to be clued in so I could participate in today's lecture, it was pretty hard for me because I have never seen Orange is the New Black.  I read the reading and that somewhat helped but I didn't feel I fully grasped all the concepts embedded in the show so that I could be active in the discussion.  So; I offer an outsiders perspective.
In the article I read that everyone is absolutely raving about how well diversity is represented in this show.  I read that diversity in terms of sexuality, not even just race, is "well" represented.  A real chore for most cable shows.  When reading the critique for all of seemingly breakthrough concepts, I felt…well, a little enraged but not entirely convinced.  I think I can see and understand where these critics come from.  I mean, the show is entirely from a white girls' perspective.  Perhaps I would be even more convinced by this analysis if I was invested in the show, the characters, and continuing stereotypes we see in OITNB.
However, this is my outsiders perspective.  Baby steps! I know that oppression for women and for people of any ethnicity other than white here in the states still exists, and I am so saddened by it.  But we have made great strides, and none of those strides have occurred all at once.  It has been an accumulation of understanding that finally reached just enough of society for change to happen.  I think the same is true with sexuality here in the states, and even these existing stereotypes.  I mean I am not saying I am okay with the slow pace it's taking, I would end the oppression today if I could.  This rant being said; I think OITNB is a good step to have been taken.  I think it will pave the way for more accurately depicted diversity in shows, books, and movies to come. Hopefully at least!
