Social Media...am I right!?!?!

Social Media websites have become very popular in the past ten years and they continue to grow. However...are these websites being used like they are suppose to or are they turning into a way for people to escape reality and become more introverted and less outgoing?

"Back in my day we didn't ask girls for their phone numbers...we asked for their screen names."
                                                                                                                                         -Skyler Blevins

My generation is basically the same age as the Internet. We grew up with AOL, AIM, MySpace, and Xenga. I can remember coming home from school, eating dinner, and then getting on the Internet to talk to my friends that I just saw a few hours earlier. I always became frustrated when my mom was expecting a call because that meant I couldn't get on the Internet due to the Internet being connected to the phone line. Gotta love the old days. I am sure this was a phase we all went through...however...some never really grew out of that phase.

Social Media websites have evolved so much throughout the years and through that evolution it has become addicting, dangerous, and unhealthy. I am honestly scared for our future because people are becoming a lot more introverted and would prefer to talk to other individuals through the Internet or through a text rather than face to face. Look at all the examples;

That show Catfish has shown what social media has done for those people who met each other online and have never met in real life. You can be whoever you want on the Internet...but in real life you can only be you.

Another example; Cyber Bullying.
Kids seem to be becoming a lot more violent lately and social media makes it so much easier. I assume it is a lot easier to bully someone over the internet rather in real life because you don't have the same consequences.

I am probably just babbling by now and you probably think I am one of those people who never use social media....not true. I pretty much check my Facebook every other hour of the day. It has become kind of like an addiction where my muscle memory automatically logs onto Facebook as soon as I open my laptop. I've caught myself several times when I am trying to be productive or trying to fall asleep at night.

Social Media is also a great way to network, to stay in touch with old friends and relatives, and can be an online sort of scrapbook of your life. However...just like most things on the Internet...if it falls into the wrong hands...it can be used for evil and be very dangerous for some.

Social Media though...am I right!?!?!
