Oh lord, my family watches so much
reality TV, every housewife and many toddlers in tiaras. As time wore on I
really became annoyed with many of the shows as I’d find myself watching the
rest of the episode. They really do manage to draw you in just enough to keep
you watching. They draw you in but not much more and they let you have the
commercial time for discussion. “Why would she say that, she’s so selfish.” I
almost forget she’s a fabrication.
I have no
control of the remote when those shows are on but I must admit my own interest
with the program Moonshiners. Something about the people seem incapable of not
being genuine. I don’t doubt they take risks in the show and I think that’s
what makes it interesting. They seem to embody a certain culture. A rebellious
culture in a way that doesn’t see them becoming the punch line, however I often
wonder if that’s how others see them for the way they live, talk, and
dress. That culture is something I have
known in real life and the show has a decent job of showing them how they are,
but perhaps they don’t do enough to explain the culture to the watchers.
It can be
very important to remember that people do make fun of them and don’t understand
their situation and mindset and that may lead these people to make vast
assumptions about them. Maybe others might think they are crazy and uneducated
but I think it would be an amazing adventure to try to make my own moonshine in
the woods and I often wonder how much I could learn from them. Perhaps it’s
just our own reactions that create the negativity.
