I have never been one to be interested in any sort of “zombie media”, but
listening to Eric King Watts’s speeches about the zombie media genre opened my
eyes to the connection to the world around us. This genre may seem far out
there to some, but there is a rise in films, television shows, books, and
academic works about such trauma.
This type of genre is preoccupied with “end-of-days” fantasies that feed
the motives of extreme preparedness groups. There have been repetitive events
ranging from The Great Depression, to the assignation of Martin Luther King
Jr., to even the 9/11 Terrorist Attack that have a high anxiety affect on the
world. The Great Depression is seen as emerging of zombies. “Zombie” is the
relation to post 9/11 as we view history as repeating itself. These reoccurring
events associate with such genre that can potentially have an unrestrained
impact on our daily lives without us even realizing.
Through this zombie genre, they tell us that we are all walking dead, we
have heightened anxiety over the future, and we are the end of the world
spectacles. These aspects show us about the uncertainty about our future. Being
able to make the relationship between the zombie media genre to the reoccurring
events around us has given me a better connection to these world events. This
has led us to wonder what could potentially happen next. We might not be able
to “prepare” for such events, but the zombie media genre has opened up our
minds to the true meaning of such trauma.
