A popular Chinese Reality TV: Dad, where are we going?

In last year, there was a reality TV became prevalent in China. It is Dad, where are we going. It’s originally from southern Korea. Chinese TV station bought the copyright of it and got success of it. The show is about five famous dads bring their kids and travelling to different places. They would stay at each place for three days and two nights. Those dads are public figures like movie star, model, director and speed racer.

In my opinion, the reasons that this show was becoming popular are not unexpected. At first, people are curious about the personal life of stars. It’s even more curious if they would bring their own kids. They are also humans. Even if they are good at lie to audience or they have a bad reputation. They will not lie to their kids. Audience also would be curious about how did these famous daddies educated their kids.

Secondary, for the fans of those famous dads, they will reasonably like their kids. The show greatly captures the psychology of audience.

Thirdly, in the traditional family structure, mom would be the one who take care of kids. However, in this show, it is backwards. We can assume what could happen if only dad bring kids out. In this point, the show gains more audience. Audience maybe think those dads don’t know how to take care of kids and it could causes different jokes and conflict.

Fourth, kids of those famous dads were born with best food, drinks, and other good stuff. Since the places they went were countryside. Obviously, kids would not be adapt to the environment. This point adds the dramatic element for the show. Audience might be curious, are kids going to cry? Are they going to miss mom? How can they overcome the problems during the whole process of staying countryside?

This show also has a strict rule, since the kids are all around 4-6 years old. They are not allowed to bring any electronic devices. In modern time, these kids are addicted to technology, it is so hard to ask them get rid of IPad and phones for three days.

Overall, I think that’s why this show could be successful. It contains enough elements to capture audiences’ attention and curiosity.
