I've noticed a reoccurring theme this semester in COMM 322, and that is a hatred for different groups. There is a whole culture of hate for the hipsters. A culture of hate for gays. A culture of hate for the princess culture. A culture of hate for mass production of food. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Why does the media focus so much on the things we hate in this world? Why not the things that people love, like ice cream and pizza? Even better why even say hate for these things. Hatred is a deep emotion, and often it is an overused word.
Do people really hate hipsters? Maybe some do. Most people who say they hate hipsters though I believe are more annoyed with them. Many hipsters do tend to have the arrogant, self-righteous attitude. I know many people who have this attitude who are not hipsters, and I do not hate them. I am extremely annoyed with them at times, but I would not say I hate them.
The same goes for gays. Do people actually hate the individual? More than likely no. I believe that people dislike things they do not understand. It is how people deal with this. When you do not understand something you become uncomfortable with it. This uncomfortableness and misunderstanding of homosexuality is not a hatred, it is an uncomfortableness and a misunderstanding. Perhaps in this instance people let it morph itself into hate because that seems to be easier for people to show than uncomfortableness.
The princess culture and the mass production of food fall into this same category. There has been a lot of talk on our blog about people hating the princess culture and Disney. About hating the major food companies and how they treat animals and employees. I agree, we should not force our kids into gender stereotypes that they princess culture seems to have with it. But to say we hate it? That seems to be taking it a little to far. Like above maybe we are just uncomfortable with it, or even dislike it.
Hate is strong word, and it is horridly overused in our society. People throw the word hate around like they throw the word love around. After a while the words start to lose its meaning. When something is classified a 'hate crime' it is instantly going to draw more peoples attention that just a murder, because hate has such an evil connotation with it. The media plays into this hate culture because that is what sells.
Next time instead of using the word hate think about what you are really trying to say. Are you annoyed by it? Do you dislike something? Are you uncomfortable with it? Expand your vocabulary, so that you are more accurately representing you feelings.
