Our genration VS our parents on gay rights

After reading the article for class about the Mathew Shepard murder it got me thinking about why certain people are so against homosexuality. I grew up in a family with a mother who does not have a problem with homosexuality and a father who does.  I have never understood my fathers issues with gay rights, as I chose to learn from my mother's side of the argument.  A few years ago, I asked my dad why he had such a problem with homosexuality and he said, "It just isn't right".  This is obviously not a valid answer because, who is he to govern what is right and wrong in society, so I asked him to elaborate.  My dad came up with this whole speech about the bible and how men and women were made to reproduce and that was just how it was supposed to be.
I have several other friends whose parents and grandparents think in the same way that my father does and the only logical thing I can make out from the situation is that our generations is more accepting because we have had more exposure to the gay community.  When our parents were in school, there was maybe 1 homosexual person out in the whole school.  Nowadays, homosexual people are much more common in school and in society in general.  Our generation has also been exposed to more gay celebrities and role models, a few being, Ellen DeGeneres, Stephan Fry, Jane Lynch and Neil Patrick Harris.   It makes my heart happy to think that we as a generation are more accepting of homosexuality than our parents were and I can only hope that this revolution continues to grow.
