The Gay Street

I traveled in San Francisco in 2007. It was the first time I saw gay street and gay flag. I hadn’t even met many gay people before that.
In China, there are many gays and lesbian indeed, but gay marriage is illegal. Chinese gay population is about 60 million now. However, about 80 percent gay people get married with another gender because the force from their family and friends. They don’t love their husband or wife after marriage, but they compromise to the society and tradition.
Actually, Chinese government has been changing the law about homosexuality. Chinese criminal law deleted homosexuality as a crime of hooliganism in 1997. Beijing first court repealed that homosexuality be considered as parasexuality in 2000. In 2006, Chinese famous sociologist Li Yinhe proposed to the Chinese people’s political consultative conference about legalizing homosexual marriage. But the press spokesman indicated that homosexual marriage is still too advanced in China. It is a pity caused by traditional concept that Chinese people are not as open as western people to accept different concepts.
I have some lesbian friends in China, they have girlfriends and are very happy to be together with each other. That is to say, there are more and more Chinese gay people begin to be brave to be themselves. I don’t know if these friends will marry boys they don’t love or not. But I can tell our generation is the hope to make legalization of homosexual marriage come true in China.
I hope one day, we will have a gay street in China, too. It has many gay flags, and gay people live in it happily.
