orange is the new black

After reading over the article for class today, http://www.salon.com/2013/08/22/the_bar_for_tv_diversity_is_way_too_low/ , I kinda got angry.
So the show is filled with a lot of diversity, yay Netflix! But even when something is done right, and based off a true story it still gets criticized for not doing it 'well enough.' Are you kidding me? (Said the little white girl.) But I mean this is ridiculous. Sure, TV does need to be more diverse, I want it to be. And Orange is the New Black does this.
And even though it provides these lives through the eyes of a white woman in jail, is it really? I don't think so. You learn about other inmates, lives. An Italian, a southern woman, a trans-woman, Hispanics and African Americans.
It's not all about Piper. In the book however; yes, yes it is. The true story shows it through the eyes of Piper and her time she spent in jail. But the show just dives into the lives of everyone. Sure, the focus is on Piper in each episode but not until they go through the life of someone else for awhile.
Why should you like Orange is the New Black? Because of diversity? Because of the sexuality? How about because it is a great show that has everything you need and more in it. Yes other shows should be like this, but being super picky, which is alright too, shouldn't be directed toward a show based off of true events and true people. They are actors portraying real people. Real people. Did I mention that they are based off of real people. It's not like the director was like 'okay lets make everyone super stereotypical."' That is just the way that the real Piper described them and what she went through.
