Binge watching is one of those things that is becoming
mainstream that I have been doing for a while. I’m not really proud of that,
simply that I’ve been using the Internet for TV shows for quite a while. There
are more streaming sites than Netflix such as Crunchyroll that streams anime.
Anime, for those that might not know is Japanese animated shows. They may be
called cartoons but unlike many western cartoons they often follow a storyline.
This is one of the reasons you can binge them so easily.
Many episodes will set up the next one and tease you to get
you to watch, and then watching the next one is as easy as clicking an arrow.
One problem that has come out of this however is that sometimes some of the
enjoyment is lost when a more obvious plot whole is exposed that may have been
covered by the week in between. These shows simply aren’t designed to be
watched as a movie. They are designed to last an entire season.
I really feel like the shows on Netflix like House of Cards
or Orange is the New Black are designed much more to be watched all at once.
They seem to be made as a movie and then artificially split up later. They keep
the familiar format of a TV show to allow you to digest them easily but they
are designed to be consumed in an entirely new way. In the end, I love the new
way of making TV shows because I feel it leaves more creativity in the hands of
the creators and not the distributors.
