Dude.
I never hear anyone ever talk about this in media criticism classes: The portrayal of Southern American people on TV is horribly inaccurate and really offensive.
Almost every southern person on TV is a hick, racist, has a totally over the top accent, etc.
Also basically anyone with a southern accent is implied to be stupid.
My family is from the South, so it is particularly annoying that people from West Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, etc, are often portrayed as hillbillies.
My aunt from WV is a fashion designer. But she lives on a mountain though, so she's just a dumb hick who drinks moonshine and plays the banjo, right?
The only show I can really think of that portrays southern people as normal is Walking Dead, because it takes place in Georgia. They have southern accents but they aren't totally over the top or stupid sounding. So that is kind of neat.
I guess I should find some examples so I sound more legit. Gimme a bit.
