Can Video Games Really Change the World?

It's a bit outlandish to think that by playing video games, we could change the world. The stigma of video games & gamers is: that video games are brain-numbing & a waste of time, and that people who aren't satisfied with their real lives use video games as an escape to "be" someone else. That stigma reigns true for some gamers, but certainly not all. However, can we see the latter changing the world?

I think that we can change the world in practically anything we do---if we really want to. Making any real change is about intention. If you don't have the intention to do so, then it just isn't purposeful & isn't quite the same as change lead with intention. That's not to say that there haven't been people who have made history for changing the world & didn't realize they were going to, so it can be done, I just don't see it happening through video games.

A lot of people are unhappy with the way the world is, but won't or may not even want to do anything to change it. That's perfectly fine, but when you get a bunch of people like that and make them play video games, I don't think they can change the world. They don't want to, nor do they believe they can. But on the other hand, maybe the right kind of video game can make those types of people realize their true power & potential, and inspire them to change the world? Who knows? People react to things differently. Video games can inspire greatness in one person, but violence in another.

I think that Jane McGonigal has an interesting theory and I would like to think that games changing the world is a viable thing, but I'm not quite convinced yet. I will say though, we live in a time where technology & access to it is powerful, so if used strategically, it can definitely change our world. It's already begun to..
