I was recently watching Legally Blonde (it was on MTV this
weekend… I may have watched it twice) and it got me thinking about how the
media portrays Greek life. I am sure
everybody has seen Animal House, American Pie, Blue Mountain State, and Greek
(all very good shows) but is that the norm for Greek life? Honestly, when I rushed at Ball State I
assumed I was joining a large party, complete with boys and booze because that
is what I am constantly being told.
However, that is nothing like what I received when I joined
Alpha Chi Omega. I am hardly around boys
(and I even shower!), I am by no means a partier, and yeah sometimes the girls
fight but that is pretty standard between 120 girls. Nevertheless, Alpha Chi is hardly like Greek
and Animal House; it is more or less similar to Elle Wood’s sorority.
I basically share a rare and unbreakable bond with these
girls. I have 120 girls I can turn to no
matter what and they are willing to listen.
Granted, I also have 120 girls I can get lunch with or go out on a
Friday night with but they are always going to make sure that I end up home,
safely. They are true sisters and not
just drinking buddies. Alpha Chi Omega
helped me find my mentor, my best friends, and roommates; although, they have
yet to help me find my Emmett, they sure as hell keep me away from the Warrens.
But do not get me wrong, I may not like how the media
portrays Greek life but I am definitely not going to boycott all movies that
bring it up. I fully intend to see
neighbors because Zac Efron as a fraternities president with a Franco brother
sidekick? Done. I am in!
