Gender Norms Danielle Jones
Where did gender norms arise? In the late 1920's a chart showing sex-appropriate colors for girls and boys was published. Should we as society identify colors for certain genders? I feel like setting certain colors to certain genders relates back to feminism. We believe that blue is seen as a more masculine color and pink is seen as a more passive, feminine color. In today's society without knowing we scum to this notion when we send the message to our son's that playing with race cars and things that are more rough. We send the message to our little girls that playing with barbie dolls are right and most of the girl stuff is pink. What a princess can be seen as is beauty, submissive everything we use as subliminal messages with the color pink. These notions are promoted through media, parents as explained earlier and other things in the media like internet. We as a culture need to change society and its underlining meanings and make them more interchangeable. To me in society we make it known what a women should be and what a men should be. But it today's society we also have a lot of feminist. Women who step out of what is expected of them and fill a masculine role. By viewing the feminist perspective and underline meanings of gender roles we have pointed out all stereotypes of what is considered girl and what is considered boy using this tactic allows the selling of more stuff to fit those stereotypes.
