Last class we talked about Reality
TV shows and how it affects people’s persecutions. Also how it portrays
different types of people, and what stereotypes reality TV tries to amplify. In
this blog I am going to talk about two different examples of this and how they
not only enforce stereotypes but also how it affects peoples view on them.
One good example is the real world,
they try to come off as a normal group of young adults being put together in a
house and being able to just hang out with each other and enjoy the city. One
thing they don’t say, that changes peoples perceptions is that when the people
are interview to possibly get in the show, the TV companies look for people
they know will cause fights which gets more views.
Another example is, like discussed
in class, Honey boo boo. This show is portrayed to be a non-educated lower
class family. We found out that this portrayal is not true because when the
family is seen outside of the show, they come off way more educated. One
example that show how much more educated they are in real life was when they
showed the mom at the Wendy Williams show where she talked about how she is
saving money for her kids to have access to when they become 18, and other
smart fiscal moves that can help them maintain their new wealth. The Honey Boo
Boo show add subtitles and amplifies the “stupid” mistakes that they make but
in reality they are only showing the worst parts of the nine month they tape
the show, so in boost the Stereotypes they are trying to get across.
