Sports for Fans

Sports are a huge part of our culture. Why? It is, for the most part, men getting sweaty and playing some type of game that involves a ball. But people bleed for it. People will get into fights in bars over who's favorite team or player is better. I'm still very confused about why.

If I was forced to guess, and in this instance I am forcing myself, I would say that people are obsessed with sports because it's people doing what they love for a living. Every little boy I knew growing up dreamed about being a professional athlete. Even when it was just me shooting hoops in the drive way, I would pretend I was about to hit the game winner in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

The difference is that I let sports go. I realized that I would never make it to college to play basketball, much less the NBA. I left sports and my passion for them in the past. Some people are absolutely unable to do this. They tie themselves to men who achieved their childhood dreams. I notice people talking about pro sports teams and using the pronoun "we". Do these people play for the team? No, but they are so enamored with the sports team that they feel as if they are a part of it.

People also think they know everything about the sport they like. They act as if they know more than the coaches, players, and other fans. No one can no more about a sport than a passionate fan. It's pathetic.

I wish people would just let the past sit in the past, that way people didn't get into physical fights about which pitcher is better.
