Sports and Politics

I am a Cincinnati Reds fan and was looking through the website the other day when I noticed there were many camouflage jerseys hats and other memorabilia one could purchase from their online store.  I didn't think much of it except that these would be cool to wear when going to a game on Military Appreciation day or something of the sort.  I didn't dawn on me the power that those days have on Reds fans until the video we watched in class today.

There were ad's that popped up throughout my visit to the website that were about joining the Marines and Army.  I have been to a Military Appreciation day at Great American Ball Park and after watching the video today in class, I think there is more behind the day than simply honoring our service men and women for a day at the ball park.

For each ticket purchased to the game that day, money was donated to "helping support our troops."  Throughout the game there were service men and women recognized from the local area for serving in our military.  They made the men and women look very much like heros, of course they are, but they did so in a way that could make many young children believe if they were to join the military it would be a lot of recognition and waving to a ball park full of fans.  There was never mention about the harsh reality of what serving our country can truly be like.  What really got me was when the announcer would say things like "visit goarmy.com to find out more information on joining our military" or something of the sort.

It makes one wonder what these Military Appreciation days are truly about in the sporting arena after watching documentaries like the one we did in class today.
