How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) was my favorite show, and it went out with a bang on Monday night. I can't say that it was one that I particularly felt too great about, to be honest. I really want to air out a little and weigh in on what happened. Hold on to your caps, ladies and gents. This could get a little messy.
Here's where the spoilers come in. Don't read ahead if you haven't seen the episode. You've been forewarned.
The rundown: (maybe in chronological order with the episode, but probably not)
- Barney and Robin divorced after 3 years of marriage.
- Robin distances from the group because of her job and Barney reverts back to his old ways.
- Barney gets girl #31 pregnant after his 'Perfect Month' and has a baby girl.
- Marshall and Lily have their third kid and move out of the good 'ol apartment.
- The mother and Ted have two kids and wait to get married for 7 years.
- The mother gets sick and dies.
- Ted meets the mother (obviously).
- The kids tell Ted to go after "aunt" Robin.
- Ted goes to Robins apartment and relives the moment in the pilot with the blue french horn.
WHAT THE HELL? My biggest complaint is that the whole show wasn't even about the mother! It was about Ted being hopelessly in love with Robin the whole time. I guess I can't be too mad because we did meet and develop a relationship with the mother after 8 seasons, but they freaking killed her off a few years down the road and Ted gets with Robin at the end. They let us get attached to the adorable Cristin Milioti and then they took her away from us so fast it made my head spin.
I just found this article that talks about Josh Radnor knowing the whole time about the ending. Here's what he had to say, ""I thought the title of the show was always a bit of a fake-out," he said. "It was more of a hook to hang the thing on. Really it was more about these are the crazy adventures and these are the lessons I had to learn before I met your mother."" Props to him for keeping that secret for so long. I can't believe this whole time they were misleading us!

I guess one of the biggest rules in media is beginning where you want to end, and even though 25 years between the night Ted met Robin passed from when he goes back to her in the finale, the same scenario played out exactly the way it did before. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are brilliant writers and I loved the show, but I was so disappointed that the whole time was just a runaround for Ted to get back with Robin the same way he got with her in the pilot episode.
The biggest thing I have tried to keep in mind since the finale is that the show wasn't about things going perfectly for the characters. They all had their trials and tribulations throughout the show, from Marshall losing his dad to Ted being left at the alter. The show was all about dealing with real life and the changes that happen throughout and I think the finale did a good job summing up that theme.
